10:00pm |  The defending state champion Long Beach City College men’s volleyball team compiled a 4-1 record on its way to a second-place finish at the 2010 LBCC Invitational on Saturday.

LBCC went 3-0 in pool play action, picking up wins over Santa Monica (30-23, 30-23), Santa Barbara (30-27, 24-30, 15-12), and Irvine Valley (30-25, 30-22).

After a first-round bye in the championship bracket, the Vikings beat Orange Coast 30-22 in the semifinals before falling to Irvine Valley 30-27 in the championship final.

“There were some great matches on Saturday,” said head coach Randy Totorp. “I thought my guys played well.”

Long Beach opened the season last week with a scrimmage match at NAIA power Cal Baptist University.  The Vikings officially begin the 2010 season with match play on Wednesday (Feb. 3) with a non-conference contest at home against Palomar College scheduled for 6 p.m.
