The Long Beach City College softball team suffered an 8-2 South Coast Conference loss to visiting Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday at LBCC.
The loss dropped Long Beach to 10-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
Mt. SAC pounded out 13 hits and blew the game open with a five runs in the fifth inning.
LBCC freshman Renee Caballero (4-2) tossed 4 1/3 innings and was touched for 10 hits and six runs (four earned) in earning the loss. Freshman Hailey Hupp closed out the game and allowed three hits and two runs.
Long Beach led early, getting a two-out run in the bottom of the first thanks to a Mt. SAC error.
Freshman center fielder Anissa Noland led off with a single to right and moved to third base after a pair of sacrifice bunts. With two down, freshman first baseman Michelle Contreras smashed a hard grounder towards second that was misplayed by Cya Santos which allowed Noland to score.
Mt. SAC jumped ahead with three runs in the top of third before Long Beach scored its final run in the bottom of the third.
Sophomore Monique Ogata reached base on an error by Mt. SAC shortstop Samantha Slonicker. A double by Noland moved her to third and freshman second baseman Desiree Villegas drove in Ogata with a sharp base hit up the middle.
Noland led LBCC at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a double and a run. Sophomore catcher Majella Friel (2 for 4) also had a pair of singles.
For Mt. SAC (8-3, 5-1 SCC), Eileen Garcia picked up the win after allowing four hits and two unearned runs over four innings. Alyssa Maldonaldowas 3 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI to lead the Mounties’ offense.
The Vikings return to action on Friday (Mar. 5) when they host Antelope Valley College in a 2:30 p.m. non-conference game.
