The Long Beach City College softball team suffered an 8-0 South Coast Conference loss to visiting Los Angeles Harbor College on Thursday at LBCC.
The loss snapped the Vikings’ three-game winning streak and dropped their record to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the SCC.
Long Beach totaled seven hits in the contest off Harbor starting pitcher Shawnae Campbell but couldn’t capitalize on its scoring chances and left a season-high 12 runners stranded on base.
Freshman first baseman Michelle Contreras was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and freshman second baseman Desiree Villegas was 2 for 2 to lead Long Beach at the plate.
Harbor’s Kayla Sax hit a two-run homerun off LBCC starter Hailey Hupp in the top of the fifth to push its lead to 4-0. The Seahawks put the game out of reach thanks to a two-out grand slam in the seventh by Brittany Garland off the Vikings’ Renee Caballero.
Hupp allowed four runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings to earn the loss and fall to 1-2 overall. Caballero tossed 2 1/3 innings and allowed four runs and three hits.
Campbell scattered seven hits in the complete-game shutout effort for Harbor (7-2, 2-1 SCC).
Long Beach returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 20) when it hosts L.A. Mission College in a 12 p.m. non-conference game.
