The Long Beach City College softball team pounded out 13 hits and freshman Renee Caballero tossed a four-hit shutout as the Vikings cruised to a 9-0 five-inning mercy rule win over visiting Pasadena City College on Thursday.
The South Coast Conference win improved Long Beach to 17-14 overall and 5-8 in conference play.
LBCC blew the game open with a seven-run third-inning. The Vikings sent 13 batters to the plate and totaled eight hits. Freshmen Melissa Schaeffer and Brittney Holden led the charge with RBI doubles.
Long Beach plated two more runs in the fourth to put the mercy rule into affect. Sophomores Monique Ogata and Majella Friel hit back-to-back RBI singles to wrap up the LBCC scoring.
Caballero scattered four hits and struck out five in the complete-game effort to improve to 9-5 overall.
Ogata (3 for 3, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and freshman Michelle Contreras (3 for 3, 2B, 2 runs) both had three hits to lead the Vikings at the plate. Friel (1 for 2) and freshman Karina Veit (2 for 3, 1 run) both drove in two runs.
For Pasadena (7-23, 1-13 SCC), Amber Frame took the loss to drop to 2-7 overall. She allowed seven runs and eight hits over 2 1/3 innings. Samantha Gontol closed out the game giving up two runs and five hits over the final 1 2/3 innings.
Long Beach returns to action on Tuesday (Apr. 6) when it travels to El Camino College for a 3 p.m. SCC game.
