The Long Beach City College softball team opened up the 2010 season this past weekend (Jan. 29-31) by going 5-1 at the Glendale College tournament. On Friday, LBCC picked up wins over Desert (10-0) and host Glendale (5-2). On Friday, the Vikings downed Antelope Valley (10-2) and defeated Grossmont (4-3). In Sunday’s tourney semifinals, Long Beach beat Citrus 5-2 before falling to East Los Angeles 5-4 in eight innings in the tournament championship final.

Freshman first baseman Michelle Contreras led LBCC offensively as she totaled nine hits, including two doubles and a triple, with five RBI. Freshman third baseman Melissa McDougall also had a good opening weekend with eight hits and six RBI.

LBCC returns to action this week with a pair of non-conference road games. On Wednesday, the Vikings travel to Fullerton for a 3 p.m. contest and on Thursday head north to Ventura for another 3 p.m. game. The Vikings open up their 2010 home and South Coast Conference schedule next Thursday (Feb. 11) at 3 p.m. against Pasadena.
