The Long Beach City College women’s water polo team held on for a 7-6 win over Ventura College in Round 1 of the Southern California Regional Playoffs on Thursday at Pasadena City College.
Long Beach, seeded No. 7 at the regionals, improved to 23-6 overall and will face No. 2 seeded rival Cerritos College on Friday at 3:15 pm in a second-round game.
Despite the close score, the Vikings led throughout the contest over No. 10 Ventura (18-5). LBCC was up 4-1 after the first quarter.
Freshman Sarah Agopian’s goal with 1:06 left in the game gave Long Beach a 7-5 lead.
Agopian, sophomore Kimmy Morrison, and freshman Melissa Mansana all scored two goals each for the Vikings. Sophomore Chelsea Dattposted five saves in goal.
LBCC will face Cerritos for just the second time this season. On October 21, Long Beach fell to the Falcons 6-4 in a South Coast Conference contest at Cerritos.
The LBCC men’s water polo is in action on Friday with a second-round playoff game. The No. 2 seeded Vikings will face No. 7 Orange Coast College at 5:45 pm. OCC was a 12-10 winner over No. 10 Saddleback in an opening-round game on Thursday.
