The Long Beach City College women’s basketball team suffered a 91-72 non-conference loss to visiting Cypress College on Saturday night at the Hall of Champions Gym.
The loss dropped Long Beach to 1-4 overall while Cypress improved to 5-2.
LBCC started the contest with just six players and had to play the majority of the game with no substitutions after sophomore guard Alanna Yimwas knocked out with an injury midway in the first half.
Despite the lack of a bench, the Vikings played solid in the first half. Cypress built a 26-11 advantage with 10:43 to go in the first before LBCC slowly started chipping away.
Long Beach narrowed the lead late in the half and got as close as 35-31 at the 4:46 mark after a pair of free throws from freshman guard Amanda Dickerson.
Cypress led 47-37 at the break before opening up the second half outscoring Long Beach by a 17-2 margin to capture its biggest lead of the game, 64-39 at the 15:59 mark.
Freshman guard Rayven Sellers nearly had a triple-double in the loss for the Vikings. She led all with 22 points, 15 rebounds, and nine assists. Freshman guard Vanessa Sullivan scored 14 points and Dickerson had 13 points.
Cypress had five players score in double figures, with Elisepa Ete’aki leading the Chargers with 13 points off of the bench. Rachel Sweezy had a team-high 14 rebounds to go with eight points.
Long Beach returns to action on Wednesday (Nov. 25) when it travels to West L.A. College for a 5 p.m. non-conference game.
