The Long Beach City College women’s soccer team pulled out a 1-0 non-conference win over visiting Taft College on Tuesday at LBCC.  The win improved LBCC to 6-4-1 overall this season while Taft fell to 3-4-1.

After a scoreless first half, things got interesting in the second as both teams had scoring chances turned away by LBCC freshman goalie Marilyn Montez and Taft keeper Danielle Fitzgerald.  In the 65th and 74th minute, Montez made a pair of diving stabs to her left to knock away potential goals.  And in minute 69, Fitzgerald dove to her left to take away a goal from LBCC freshman midfielder Janna Mora.

But LBCC finally got on the board in the 81st minute, when freshman midfielder Courtney Campbell sent a breakaway pass down the left side to freshman forward Glenda Rodriguez. Her initial shot was stopped by Fitzgerald but Rodriguez was able to collect the rebound and deposit it into the open net for the game-winner.

Montez posted six saves in goal to post her fifth shutout of the season.

Long Beach returns to action next Tuesday, Sept. 30, when it opens South Coast Conference play at home against El Camino College at 2 p.m.
