Winning is the best therapy, just ask the Long Beach City College women’s volleyball team. After a heartbreaking loss last Wednesday, LBCC defeated East L.A. on Friday in three sets, and then returned home last night to take down L.A. Trade Tech, 25-10, 25-12, 25-10, in just 54 minutes.
The match was never really competitive as LBCC tallied a staggering 24 service aces on the night. In the first set, Maricris Lapaix paced the offense with two of her four aces and four kills while middle blocker Audris Leiataua dominated the net. Leiataua led the way for the Lady Vikings with six kills, two blocks, and three aces of her own.
No. 19 state-ranked LBCC used a 12-2 run in the second set, and an 11-2 run in the third to take charge of the match. The lopsided score allowed head coach Suzie Witmer to mix and match players as everyone on the team saw action.
“This is a very talented group, all around,” said Witmer, whose team is now 9-2, 2-0 in the SCC. “It’s not a certain six. Everybody’s about the same, so we get to be creative. They aren’t just up or back line players. That’s a good thing.”
Freshman libero Keely Bright led the team with six digs, and setter Cashmere Santos totaled 22 assists and two aces. Lakewood grad Jamie Baumler added four kills and three aces.
LBCC will be in action at home again next Wednesday at 6pm against L.A. City.
