There are a lot of eyes watching the ladies of the net at Long Beach State, but the Long Beach City College women’s volleyball team just improved to 2-0 on the season with its three-game sweep of visiting Ventura College on Tuesday.  The Vikings earned their second straight 3-0 win tonight, defeating Ventura by scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 26-24. With the loss, Ventura fell to 0-2 overall.

Despite the sweep, Ventura made Long Beach earn the win. In game three, the Vikings had match point at 24-22, but were unable to put the Pirates away.  Ventura tied up the game at 24 before the Vikings rallied for the next two points to end the contest.

“We improved a lot tonight during the match,” said third-year LBCC head coach Suzie Witmer. “I’m really proud of the way the girls have really come together as a team so early in the season. Sometimes it’s hard to teach a team to play together but this group already has it.”

Sophomore outside hitter Lacy Baker led LBCC with 13 kills and nine digs. Freshman right side Lauren Nieraeth chipped in with eight kills and five blocks, while freshman defensive specialist Keeley Bright came off the bench and had six digs and three aces.

Long Beach returns to action on Friday (Sep. 5) when it travels to Santa Monica College for a 5 p.m. non-conference match.
