Reports From LBSU

The Long Beach State men’s and women’s golf teams take to the road this week as both squads will be playing in local tournaments in Southern California.

The women’s team will be among an 18-team field at the Bruin Wave Invitational hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine. The three-day 54-hole tournament will take place at the Robinson Ranch Golf Club’s par-72, 6,282 Valley Course in Santa Clarita. First and second rounds are scheduled for an 8 a.m. start on Monday (Mar. 1) and Tuesday (Mar. 2), while final round play is scheduled to start at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday (Mar. 3). Senior Brenda Chhuor, junior Reina Rogers, sophomores Monica Villarreal and Noelle Zavaleta and freshman Simone Hoey will represent the 49ers as they compete against Arizona State, BYU, Cal State Northridge, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, San Diego State, San Francisco, Stanford, UCLA, UNLV, USC, Washington and Washington State.

The 49er women are coming off from a eighth place (out of 11 teams) finish at the Peg Barnard Invitational two weeks ago at Stanford. The Beach carded a 65-over par 633 (318-315) to finish just six strokes behind No. 40 Texas. Zavaleta was the top player for LBSU as she tied for 25th with a 14-over 156 (77-79).

On the men’s side, the 49ers travel to Beaumont for the Braveheart Classic hosted by UC Riverside. The two-day 54-hole event will take place at the par-72, 7,003 yard Oak Valley Golf Club. First and second round action will be played on Monday, Mar. 1 at 7:45 a.m. while final round play concludes on Tuesday, Mar. 2 at 8 a.m. Both days will be a shotgun start.

LBSU will be among a 15-team field that features Arizona, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Gonzaga, La Verne, Loyola Marymount, Minnesota, Portland, Sacramento State, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, UC Riverside and UC Santa Barbara. Live scoring will not be available for this tournament.

The 49ers are coming off from a ninth place finish (out of 14 teams) at the Travis Mathew Battle at the Beach in Newport Coast. LBSU recorded a 29-over 1,094 (358-369-367) to finish one stroke ahead of No. 25 Tennessee (10th) and two strokes ahead of Notre Dame (11th). Freshman Raymond Ho led the way for the 49ers as he tied for 31st with a three-over 216 (67-74-75).
