The Long Beach State men’s golf team shot a 12-over 367 in Tuesday’s final round of the Travis Mathew Battle at the Beach to finish in ninth place at the Pelican Hill Resort Ocean North course in Newport Coast, Calif.
The 49ers finished the three-day 54-hole tournament at 30-over 1,095 as the team collected scores of 358 and 369 in the first two rounds. LBSU finished one stroke ahead of No. 13 Tennessee (10th) and two strokes ahead of No. 69 Notre Dame (11th).
Tournament co-host UCLA used a final round of 348 to claim the team title and finish at 10-under 1,055. The 14th ranked Bruins held onto a one-shot lead over No. 48 Arkansas and No. 6 Washington as the Razorbacks and Huskies tied for second at 1,056 (-9). No. 24 Oregon State which had led the field of 14 teams in the first two rounds finished in fourth with a 1,060 (-5) and No. 35 San Diego State rounded out the top five with a 1,070 (+5).
Freshman Raymond Ho was the top player for The Beach in all three rounds as he finished with a four-over 75. Ho recorded two double bogeys at the 7th and 9th holes to tie for 31st with a 216 (+3).
Sophomore Kevin Roy carded his best round of the tournament with a 1-under 70 to finish with a 217 (+4). Roy scored three birdies and two bogeys for the round to move up in the standings from 50th to tie for 36th.
Freshman Benjamin Lein finished with a 74 to tie for 46th at 220 (+7), while senior Robbie Berton (76) and sophomore Austin Love (73) carded scores of 221 (+8) to tie for 51st.
Freshman Philip Chian, playing as an individual, tied for 67th with a 225 (+12) and senior Michael Drake tied for 81st at 235 (+22).
David Lingmerth of Arkansas and Chris Williams of Washington tied for first as both players share the individual medalist honors. Lingmerth and Williams finished at 205 (-8) and held onto a one-stroke lead over three players tied for third.
The 49ers return to action as they travel to Pauma Valley, Calif., Mar. 15-16, for the USF’s Triumph at Pauma Valley hosted by San Francisco.
