The Long Beach State men’s golf team closed out the Triumph at Pauma Valley as the 49ers recorded their lowest score of the tournament with a final round of 297 to finish in third place. LBSU shot a 299 in the first two rounds to finish with a 54-hole total of 43-over par 895 at the par-71, 7,077 yard Pauma Valley Country Club in Pauma Valley.
The 49ers had four players finish in the top 20 as sophomore Kevin Roy was the top player for The Beach as he finished in sixth with a 10-over 223 (75-71-77), followed by senior Robbie Berton as he finished just one-stroke behind at 224 (75-75-74) to tie for seventh. Freshman Benjamin Lein completed the tournament at 12-over 225 (78-76-71) for a share of 11th place, while senior Michael Drake tied for 16th at 14-over 227 (75-77-75)
Freshman Raymond Ho rounded out the top-five players for the 49ers as he tied for 30th with a 21-over 234 (74-83-77), while fellow freshman Philip Chian playing as an individual carded a 238 (81-78-79) to tie for 40th.
Roy led the way for LBSU as he ranked second in par holes with 36 and Drake with 29. Berton ranked second in birdies with 10, followed by Drake at nine and Lein, Ho and Chian scored seven apiece.
Tournament host University of San Francisco went into the final round with a seven-stroke lead over Central Arkansas. But, the Bears came back with the low round of the day with a 296 to take the team title away from the Dons as USF scored a 308 to finish in second, five strokes behind UCA.
Tom Whitney of Air Force claimed the individual medalist as he carded a tournament low of 68 in the final round to finish at 211 (-2) and hold a four shot lead over Steven Lecuyer of Central Arkansas at 215 (+2).
The 49ers return to action Mar, 28-30, as they travel to the east coast for the Hootie at Bulls Bay in Awendaw, S.C.
