Long Beach State men’s golf Coach Bill Poutre has announced the signing of Chien Yao (Alan) Hung of Taipei, Taiwan. Hung is listed by Golfweek’s Sagarin rankings as the No. 1 International Recruit and the No. 7 overall recruit for the 2010 class. His overall Junior World Ranking is No. 14 and he is currently No. 55 in the World Amateur Player of the Year standings.
“Alan is the highest ranked player ever to join this program,” said Poutre. “He is an outstanding player and a quality person. He has an incredible international golf resume and has proven he can compete and win at any level. Alan is a self motivated, hard working confident young man. He will be a great fit for the culture of this team and will surely lead this program to new levels.”
Hung will join a very young talented but experienced group on next year’s roster. Sophomore Kevin Roy is 10th on the school’s all-time scoring average list and his classmate Kevin Lim, the 2009 Big West Conference Freshman of the Year, will return with three years of eligibility following his redshirt year. This year’s freshman class is ranked No. 25 on Golfstat’s freshman impact ranking led by leading Big West Freshman of the Year candidate Benjamin Lein. Lein leads a class that included three of the top 10 recruits from the state of California in 2009 including Raymond Ho and Philip Chian.
The 49ers recently completed their regular season playing one of the toughest schedules in school history. The team had quality wins over No. 3 Oregon and No. 25 Tennessee as well as over No. 38 Arizona. Their Big West regular season record was 14-4. The team will compete for an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament at next week’s Big West Championship at Mission Viejo Country Club on May 3-4.
