While former 49er Paul Goydos records record numbers at Pebble Beach and sits tied for the lead headed to the weekend, the Long Beach State men’s golf team opens the spring season to the 2009-10 campaign as they co-host with UCLA the 2010 Travis Mathew Battle At The Beach golf tournament at Pelican Hill Resort Ocean North Course (par-72, 6,945 yards) in Newport Coast, Calif.

The three-day 54-hole tournament is scheduled to begin on Saturday, Feb. 13, with a College-AM tournament that begins at 8:30 a.m. Then on Sunday, Feb. 14, opening round of the collegiate championship will tee off at 7:05 a.m., followed on Monday, Feb. 15 with second round action beginning at the same start time. Final round play concludes on Tuesday, Feb. 16 with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

The inaugural Battle At The Beach features 14 teams from eight different conferences (No. 15 Arizona State, No. 48 Arkansas, No. 85 Colorado, No. 39 Colorado State, No. 69 Notre Dame, No. 24 Oregon State, San Francisco, No. 35 San Diego State, No. 13 Tennessee, Texas-San Antonio, No. 67 UC Davis, No. 14 UCLA and No. 6 Washington).

“It is important for UCLA to be a part of such an outstanding event like The Battle At The Beach,” said Bruin Head Coach Derek Freeman. “This tournament has the potential to be one of college’s top events and we feel privileged to be co-hosting.”

“I am very excited to work with Coach Freeman on this premier event,” said 49er Head Coach Bill Poutre. “We have an outstanding field of 14 which includes eight teams currently ranked in the top 50. Our goal is to develop this event into one of the country’s finest college events.”
