The Long Beach State men’s golf team opened the 2009-10 campaign to a strong start as the 49ers carded an eight-over par 584 to finish in third place at the second annual Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. LBSU shot a 298 in the opening round and came back to improve by 12 shots for a second round score of 286 at the par-72, 7,322 yard Desert Club.

Santa Clara leads the field of 16 teams as the Broncos recorded a four-under 572 (289-283) and holds a two-stroke lead over second place Cal State Northridge (574) and 12 strokes over The Beach.

The 49ers were led by freshman Raymond Ho as he shot a 74 and 69 on the first day to finish with a one-under 143 to tie for ninth.

Senior Steve Gibson tied for 13th with a one-over 145 (74-71), followed by classmate Michael Drake with a four-over 148 (74-74) to finish tied for 29th.

Sophomore Kevin Roy carded six-over 150 (78-72) to tie for 39th and freshman Benjamin Lein tied for 66th with a 10-over 154 (76-78).

Gabe Maier of Wyoming sits on top of the leader board with a six-under 138 as he holds a one-shot lead over Nick Delio and Davis Kirkland of Cal State Northridge.

Final round play concludes on Tuesday morning at 7:45 a.m.
