10:00pm | Eugene Phelps has been named the Big West Conference Player of the Week after leading the 49ers to a pair of conference wins last week.
Phelps is the fifth different 49er to win the award this season, marking the first time in the history of the conference that five different players on the same team have claimed the weekly award. Phelps joins teammates Larry Anderson (Nov. 16), T.J. Robinson (Nov. 30), Stephan Gilling (Dec. 14) and Casper Ware(Dec. 15) as player of the week winners.
Phelps claimed the award after putting up back-to-back career highs in points. He started the week with a then career-best 18 points, on 7-of-12 shooting, in LBSU’s 69-68 win at Cal State Northridge on Thursday. The sophomore forward followed that by setting a new career high with 21 points, on 9-of-14 shooting, in The Beach’s 80-58 win over UC Davis on Saturday.
For the week, Phelps averaged 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots per game, while making 61.5 percent (16-of-26) of his shots. Phelps, who entered the week as a 58.2 percent free throw shooter, also made 7-of-9 (77.8 percent)free throws. Phelps entered last week’s games averaging 8.2 points per game. The award was the first of his career.
