The Long Beach State men’s golf team shot a 22-over par 382 in Monday’s opening round of the fifth annual Gifford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle in San Martin, Calif. to finish in 14th place.
Duke leads the field of 14 teams as the Blue Devils fired a 10-under 350 to hold off second place Lamar and Oklahoma State (352) with a two-stroke lead at the par-72, 7,169 yard CordeValle Country Club.
The 49ers were led by senior Steve Gibson as he carded a three-over 75 to tie for 60th, while fellow classmate Michael Drake and sophomore Kevin Roy recorded a four-over 76 to tie for 67th.
Freshman Raymond Ho tied for 70th with a 77 (+5) and Philip Chian and Benjamin Lein both tied for 77th with a 78 (+6).
Pedro Figueiredo of UCLA and Taylor Floyd of Augusta State leads the field of 88 players at five-under 67 and hold a one stroke lead over six players tied for third.
