Dean Bittner had 24 kills but it wasn’t enough for the 49ers and they dropped a 30-22, 30-25, 26-30, 30-22 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball match to first-place Stanford on Saturday night.
Bittner finished the match hitting .405 on 42 swings, but he was out-dueled by Stanford’s Spencer McLachlin who had 21 kills and hit .559. Jim Baughman and Antwain Aguillard each added 13 kills, while Aguillard hit .524 on 21 swings. Kirk Francis led the 49ers on defense with 16 digs, while Tommy Pestolesi added 14 digs. The Beach hit .314 as a team, but couldn’t keep pace with the Cardinal who hit a blistering .412.
The Cardinal (12-4, 10-4 MPSF) cruised out to the lead wining the first two games thanks to some efficient offense. Stanford committed just one attack error in each of the first two games to take control against The Beach (9-7, 7-5 MPSF).
LBSU responded winning the third game behind a .406 hitting percentage. It wasn’t enough as the 49ers fell behind early in the fourth game and dropped the match.
