Long Beach State cross country senior Missy Barclay was named to the All-Big West Conference team for her performance this past weekend in Riverside at the Big West Championships after she finished in eighth place with a time of 21:01. Barclay’s finish in the 6,000-meter race was a personal best as she eclipsed her previous mark of 21:33 at last year’s Big West Championships.
Barclay led the 49ers to a fourth place finish as the women’s team tallied a total of 100 points. This was the highest finish for LBSU since the 2007 campaign when the 49ers placed fourth with 97 points.
“We are thrilled by Missy’s performance and to have her recognized at All-Big West Cross Country,” said distance coach Patrick Cunniff. “Missy is a symbol of everything that is right with our program. She believes in the program, works hard, puts the team first and ultimately performs at a very high level in the biggest meets.”
“She is our captain and has provided great leadership and encouragement to the other girls,” added Cunniff. “Her presence and her great finish were the keys to doing so well as a team and beating our preseason ranking by three places. Missy has developed so much in her four years here as a person and as a competitor. It is extremely gratifying to see her finish her Big West career with her very best performance.”
The 49ers return to action as they travel to the NCAA West Regional, Saturday, Nov. 14, hosted by the University of Oregon. The men’s 10K is scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m. and the women’s 6K will begin at 10:45 a.m. Both races will take place at the Springfield Country Club in Eugene, Ore.
