Long Beach State freshman Benjamin Lein fired a four-under par 68 in Tuesday’s second round of the Gifford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle to move up in the standings from 77th place to tie for 43rd.
Lein carded a total of six birdies and two bogeys at the CordeValle Country Club , including two consecutive birdies on the par-four 8th and 9th holes and the par-four 17th and par-five 18th.
As a team, the 49ers greatly improved their performance from Monday’s opening round of 382 to record a one-over 361. LBSU remains in 14th place, nine strokes behind Ohio State and 11 strokes behind 12th place Oklahoma.
Stanford took over first place with a 10-under 350 to lead the field of 14 teams and hold a one-shot lead over second place Oklahoma State and Duke (705).
Senior Michael Drake recorded an even-72 to move five spots to tie for 61st, while fellow classmate Steve Gibson finished with a two-over 74 to fall from 60th to tie for 66th.
Freshman Raymond Ho remained tied for 70th with a 73 (+1) and sophomore Kevin Roy tied for 76th with a 75 (+3).
Freshman Philip Chian finished the day in 81st with a 74 (+8).
Peter Uihlein of Oklahoma State moved up in the standings to lead the field of 88 players with a seven-under 65 to hold a two-shot lead over second place Justin Bardgett of Colorado.
