After an auspicious road trip nearly a month ago, The Long Beach State women’s soccer returned home for the Big West Conference schedule.  It’s been downhill from there with almost everything going wrong concerning injuries, late game mistakes and road refereeing.  The hits kept on coming yesterday in Irvine as the young ‘Niners took another lump during a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of host UC Irvine.

UCI edged the 49ers in shots (10-7), but LBSU won the battle in corner kicks, 9-4. Junior Karina Camacho led the way with three attempts, including two on target and one that hit the crossbar.

The Anteaters (11-6-2, 4-3-1 BWC) dented the scoreboard after 20 minutes of play when Alyssa Humphrey netted her second goal of the season on a blast from 30 yards out. UC Irvine was able to maintain its 1-0 lead for the remainder of the half, holding the 49ers to just two shots.

The home team tacked on another goal in the 59th minute. The Long Beach State defense knocked the ball out of the box on a corner kick, but it went right to Kate Berrini, whose shot went over the reach of goalkeeper Nicoline Jorgensen.  Judy Christopher converted a penalty kick for UCI at the 76:12 mark for the final 3-0 score.

With the loss, The Beach fell to 5-10-3 overall and 1-5-1 in Big West action, and will miss out on the conference tournament for the first time since 2004.

Long Beach State returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 1, when it heads to Cal State Northridge for its season finale at 1pm.
