Sophomore midfielder Shawna “The Maestro” Gordon garnered the initial 2009 Big West Women’s Soccer Player of the Week award after leading Long Beach State to a 2-0 victory over Fresno State on Sunday, Aug. 23.  In addition to the boot she had in both goals, Gordon conducted the 49ers’ frontal attack like a pro.

Gordon recorded a goal and an assist as the 49ers won their fourth consecutive season opener. The 2008 All-Big West selection set up the game-winning goal at the 12:22 mark when she placed a corner kick into the box, finding junior Lindsay Bullock, who headed the ball to the upper left netting.

Gordon then struck in the 70th minute on another corner kick, this one curving in and slipping through the Fresno State goalkeeper’s hands to the far post.

Gordon also anchored a strong presence in the middle for the 49ers as LBSU dominated possession throughout the game, outshooting the Bulldogs, 15-6. This marks Gordon’s first career BWC weekly honor.

Long Beach State returns to action this Sunday (Aug. 30) when it plays host to Pac-10 foe and fifth-ranked UCLA at 5 p.m. PT.
