Just like positive momentum and winning is contagious, so is bad luck and losing. The 2009 Long Beach State women’s soccer team knows all about that. The young squad never turned the corner this year after some good showings on the road against quality opponents and they concluded the season yesterday with a 1-0 loss to Big West Conference foe Cal State Northridge Sunday afternoon at Matador Field.
The final game summed up the entire Big West conference schedule: the 49ers outshot their opponent, but came up empty-handed. The Beach (5-11-3, 1-6-1) owned the advantage in both shots (12-8) and corner kicks (4-1). Junior Lindsay Bullock led the way with four attempts, while classmate Karina Camacho added two, both of which were on frame.
Sophomore Emily Kingsborough had three saves in the loss.
The Matadors (10-9-0, 6-2-0 BWC) struck early, going up 1-0 after 11 minutes of play. Heidi Farran took a lead pass from Farryn Townley and beat Kingsborough from three yards out.
The 49ers had a chance to tie the game early in the second half with a pair of corner kicks coming within a two-minute span. At 52:58, sophomore Nicole Sweetman sent a corner into the box, but junior Bo Rael’s header shot went wide.
Farran, Townley and Melissa Fernandez led CSUN with two shots apiece, while Cynthia Jacobo had four saves in her fifth shutout of the year.
The 49ers will not advance to the conference tournament for the first time since 2004.
