LONG BEACH – The Long Beach State women’s soccer team (5-6-0) closes out its non-conference schedule this week when it plays host to No. 25 San Diego and Cal State Bakersfield. The 49ers will square off against the Toreros on Wednesday, Oct. 7, before returning to George Allen Field for a match-up with the Roadrunners on Sunday (Oct. 11). Both games are slated to get underway at 3 p.m.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO
San Diego, which is ranked third in the West Region, has won four of its last six games and brings a 6-4-1 overall record into Wednesday’s match. Erica Peeples leads a balanced USD attack with three goals, while four other players have scored twice. Courtney Parsons has seen most of the action between the posts, compiling 41 saves and a 1.43 goals against average.
A GLANCE AT THE ROADRUNNERS
Cal State Bakersfield (4-7-1) has not won a game since Sept. 11 as it has gone 0-4-1 in its last five matches. The Roadrunners will head to Pepperdine (Oct. 8) before making their way to Long Beach. CSUB is paced by Sam Pena, who has a team-best three goals and six points. Kym Gause has been the team’s primary goalkeeper, notching 66 saves and a 1.62 goals against average.
THE SERIES
Long Beach State is searching for its first win against San Diego as the 49ers trail in the series, 9-0. The Beach will be looking to avenge the 1-0 loss it suffered to the Toreros in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament (Nov. 14). Five of LBSU’s nine losses to USD have come by just one goal.
LBSU and Cal State Bakersfield are tied in their all-time series, 1-1. The Roadrunners claimed a 3-2 victory in the first meeting in 1998, but the 49ers evened the series with a 5-0 triumph in Bakersfield on Aug. 31, 2007.
COMMON FOES
Long Beach State and San Diego have both faced ranked foes UCLA and Kansas. The 49ers fell to both teams, while the Toreros battled the Bruins to a 1-1 tie, before dropping a 5-0 decision to Kansas.
The Beach and CS Bakersfield have both squared off against UC Davis, Fresno State and Loyola Marymount. LBSU is 2-1 against those teams, while the Roadrunners are 0-3. CSUB, however, defeated San Diego, 2-1, on Aug. 23.
GORDON LEADS THE WAY
Shawna Gordon, who earned All-Big West honorable mention recognition as a freshman, has paced the 49er offense in 2009. She leads the squad in goals (4), assists (4) and points (12), and ranks second on the team with 16 shots.
MOVING ON UP
Lindsay Bullock has netted three goals this year, giving her 18 in her career, which puts her in a tie for fifth on LBSU’s all-time charts. Also ranking among the 49er career goal leaders is junior Kristen Kiefer, who sits at No. 9 with 14. In addition, Bullock is third in game-winning goals (6), fifth in shots (114) and seventh in points (38).
UP NEXT
Long Beach State returns to Big West Conference action next week when it heads to UC Santa Barbara (Oct. 15) and Cal Poly (Oct. 18).
** The Long Beach Marathon will be taking place on Sunday, Oct. 11, and will be concluding around the start of the women’s soccer match vs. Cal State Bakersfield. As a reminder, there may be traffic upon arrival.
