Long Beach State was unable to complete a series sweep against Cal State Fullerton as it fell, 2-0, in front of 832 fans on Senior Day at the 49er Softball Complex Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, The Beach falls to 29-18 overall and 10-5 in the Big West. LBSU also dropped to third in the conference standings as CS Fullerton took sole possession of second place at 23-19 overall, 11-4 BWC. Cal Poly remained at the head of the pack with a series sweep over UC Davis.
Sophomore Brooke Turner (16-10) went the distance, giving up two runs on six hits, while striking out a season-high nine batters. Turner did not receive any run support, however, as the 49ers were shut out for just the fifth time this season.
Senior Brianna Goad and juniors Ashley Levine and Ashley Weber were responsible for LBSU’s three hits on the day. Weber picked up her third double of the weekend and eighth of the season. Senior Jonae Perez also reached base on a walk in each of her three plate appearances.
The Titans jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Lauren Lupinetti connected for a solo home run. That was the only hit that Turner allowed until the fifth frame when CSF added an insurance run.
Long Beach State had several opportunities to get on the board as it had base runners in all but the seventh inning, stranding eight along the way.
The 49ers return to the field next weekend when they head to UC Riverside for a three-game Big West series, May 2-3. The two teams will square off in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon, before meeting once more on Sunday.
