The best brunch in the area was at Mayfair Park Sunday, as the snack bar ran out of its eats and the Long Beach State softball team put on an impressive performance in two quality wins.

‘Niner (15-9) pitchers, Brooke Turner and Taylor Petty, gave up one run each in their wins against No.3/4 UCLA Bruins and the Syracuse Orange in the final day of the Long Beach State Invitational Sunday afternoon.

Turner was nearly unhittable against the Bruins taking a no-hitter into the sixth in the ‘Niners 2-1 win. The All-American sophomore struck out five of the first six hitters setting the pace for a two-hit, eight strikeout performance, improving her record to 8-4 in the season and for the second time in her career beat a top-5 team.

“There’s just something inside me that wants to beat the big teams,” Turner said. “I don’t know what it is, I just want to go out and show everyone who we are and that we can compete with anyone out here.”

Long Beach State go on the board in the third inning when they loaded the bases and Junior Ashley Weber jetted home on pitch that got by UCLA catcher Kaila Shull. That same at bat senior Jonae Perez lifted a deep-fly to left to score freshman Megan Denio, who pinch ran for junior Kristen Pocock.

UCLA scored in the sixth, when Monica Harris broke the no-hitter and would later score on a throwing error by second baseman Jodi Nakawatase. But in their final attempt to tie the Bruins mini-rally was cut short when Perez snatched a ball in the air, stepped on first base for an unassisted double play. Turner would end the game with a strikeout, celebration proceeded.

It was a big win for the Beach bouncing back from back-to-back losses where they left 19 runners on base. But a looser, confident ‘Niners team showed up Sunday and worked for two runs ending the Bruins 18-game win streak.

“(The team) was playing uptight,” head coach Kim Sowder said. “We talked about that before the game, ‘you come out here and compete and enjoy the game.’ I didn’t feel like we were enjoying the game.”

One thing is for sure, the fans enjoyed the game. And those who stayed were rewarded with watch freshman Taylor Petty fan a season-high 10 Syracuse (10-8) hitters in the Beach’s 4-1 in the second game to avoid any chance of a letdown loss.

“(The team) definitely understood the situation they were in,” said coach Sowder. “It’s a big win and we were excited and we were able to enjoy that for a few minutes and then move on to the next game. (The team) did a great job with that.”

Long Beach State struck quick scoring two runs in each of the first two innings. Danielle Linke got things started getting pegged then scoring on Pocock bloop single. Junior Brandy Reyes brought in Jennifer Griffin, who walked, on a sharp hit ball that was booted by the Syracuse second-baseman. Then senior Breezy Goad and Nakawatase got back-to-back hits and scored on a single by Weber, who went 2-for-3 in the game. And that was plenty for Petty (7-1), who gave up one run on six hits in seven innings of work.

The Beach has won 10 of their last 12 and will get back on the field Friday March 13 in San Jose for the National Invitational Softball Tournament.
