Reports From LBSU
The Long Beach State softball team suffered an 8-0, six-inning defeat to San Diego State Tuesday afternoon at the 49er Softball Complex.
LBSU dropped to 16-15 overall, while the Aztecs, who were receiving votes in both the NFCA and USA Softball top 25 polls, improved to 20-9.
SDSU pitcher Samantha Beasley held the 49ers to just two hits, while striking out nine. Freshman Nalani St. Germain went 1-for-2 with a walk and senior Ashley Weber also found her way into the hit column for The Beach.
Junior Brooke Turner earned the start, giving up four runs (three earned) on two hits and two walks. Sophomore Taylor Petty also scattered four hits in 4.0 innings of relief.
The Aztecs were quick to get on the board, pushing four runs across in the top of the first. The 49ers threatened in the bottom half of the inning as St. Germain drew a leadoff walk before Weber singled to left field. Both runners advanced on a ground ball from Christina Schallig, but with two outs, Caitrin DeBaun’s fly ball to left field ended the opening frame.
After tacking on one more in the third, San Diego State had another big inning in the sixth, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Eva Sahatdjian, as the Aztecs scored three runs on four hits to secure the 8-0 victory.
Long Beach State opens Big West Conference action against Pacific, April 2-3. The 49ers kick off the three-game series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. (PDT) Friday at the 49er Softball Complex.
