Reports From LBSU
Sophomore Taylor Petty continued to dominate in the circle, but the Long Beach State softball team was unable to get the timely hits as it left nine runners on base in a 2-1 loss to UC Davis in the series finale Sunday afternoon at La Rue Field.
Petty scattered just two hits and gave up three walks, while striking out four in 4.1 innings of work. Senior Bridgette Pagano also tossed 1.2 innings of hitless relief.
The Beach (20-20, 4-5 BWC) outhit the Aggies, 6-2, and was led by junior Liz Javier, who went 2-for-3 with a double. Junior Christina Schallig also doubled, while Nalani St. Germain scored LBSU’s lone run.
The 49ers broke open a scoreless game in the fifth frame with one run on one hit and two Aggie errors. St. Germain started the rally with a one-out single to center field. After Ashley Weber flied out, Caitrin DeBaun reached on a UC Davis error and St. Germain advanced to third on the play. Alisha Rosen then pinch ran for DeBaun and when she was stealing second, UCD catcher J.J. Wagoner overthrew third, allowing St. Germain to cross the plate.
The Aggies (16-24, 5-3 BWC) answered in the bottom half of the inning, pushing two runs across to take the lead for good. UC Davis loaded the bases on a pair of free passes and a fielding error by shortstop Ashley Levine. Petty then pegged Sarah Axelson to even the score at 1-1, before Kylie Fan drove in the game-winner with a fielder’s choice. Fan hit a ground ball to Levine, whose throw was late on the attempt to get the force out at home.
Alex Holmes earned the win for UC Davis and Dana Waldusky picked up her first save of the season.
Long Beach State returns to the 49er Softball Complex when it plays host to Cal Poly, April 24-25. The three-game series will get underway on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
