The Long Beach State softball team knocked out 11 hits but left 12 runners stranded in a 6-2 loss to Cal Poly in the series finale Sunday afternoon at the 49er Softball Complex.
The Beach dropped to 21-22 overall and 5-7 in Big West action, while the Mustangs improved to 20-18, 9-3 BWC.
Senior Kristen Pocock led the 49er offense, going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Junior Liz Javier also tallied two hits.
Sophomore Taylor Petty (9-12) was credited with the loss after giving up five runs on four hits, while striking out three in 2.2 innings of work. Senior Bridgette Pagano tossed 4.1 innings of relief, giving up one run and scattering three hits.
Cal Poly dented the scoreboard in the top of the second when Rebecca Patton connected for a two-run home run. The Mustangs then built a 5-0 lead in the third frame as Kendal Hennings drove a three-run shot over the left field fence.
The 49ers answered in the bottom of the third as Christina Schallig, Nalani St. Germain and Liz Javier all singled to load the bases before Pocock drove in Schallig and St. Germain with a double down the left field line. With one out, Patton then came on in relief for the Mustangs, retiring Ashley Levine and Brandy Reyesto end the rally.
CP tacked on one more in the seventh frame for the final 6-2 margin.
Long Beach State hits the road next weekend when it heads to UC Santa Barbara for a three-game series, May 1-2.
