Brooke Turner took a two-hit shutout into the seventh inning, but Pacific rallied for four runs on five hits in the seventh to steal a Big West Conference game with a 4-2 win over Long Beach State at the 49ers Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Turner allowed just three base runners over the first six innings, while striking out four during that time. She gave up a first inning hit to Megan Hom, who the 49ers caught stealing before allowing a hit to Karie Wilson and a walk to Nickki Armagost in the fourth inning.
With The Beach (17-17, 1-2 Big West) leading 2-0 heading into the final inning, Pacific (14-19, 2-1 Big West) got to Turner early in the seventh with back-to-back base hits by Karie Wilson and Armagost. Turner struck out Kellee Wilson, but then gave up an RBI single to Megan Allen to allow Pacific to pull within a run. After an Alexa Rivera walk loaded the bases, the Tigers’ Amy Moore hit a high chopper to shortstop Ashley Levine who’s throw didn’t beat Armagost to the plate allowing UOP to tie the score.
Brittany Hendrickson followed with a single to right field scoring Allen to give the Tigers their first lead of the game. Hom added a two-out RBI single to left to give Pacific a 4-2 lead which it held through the bottom of the seventh dropping Turner’s record to 9-7.
Long Beach State got on the board against Pacific scoring a run in the third inning when Jennifer Madigan singled to score Brandy Reyes. The Beach added a run in the fourth when Caitrin DeBaun drove in Ashley Weber with an RBI single down the right field line. Weber doubled down the left field line earlier in the inning to get on base.
The 49ers had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Reyes singled to open the inning and Liz Javier walked to put the tying run on base. Madigan moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and Jodi Nakawatase loaded the bases with a walk.
But Armagost shut the door on The Beach getting pinch hitter Christina Schallig to foul out to the catcher before retiring Bree Stephan for the final out on a comebacker. Armagost picked up her second straight win over the 49ers and moved to 7-4. She scattered 10 hits and walked five 49ers.
Turner finished with five strikeouts, while giving up seven hits and two walks. Weber, DeBaun, Reyes and Stephan all finished with two hits.
