The Long Beach State softball team took an early lead, but was unable to pull off the upset, falling to No. 20/22 Texas A&M, 4-2, Friday afternoon at the San Diego Classic II.
Junior Brooke Turner pitched five strong innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, while striking out seven. Sophomore Taylor Petty also tossed one inning of scoreless relief.
The 49ers (11-13) collected five hits on the day with senior Brandy Reyes leading the way, going 2-for-3. Freshman Caitrin DeBaun also had an RBI single, while classmate Nalani St. Germain and senior Ashley Weber each scored a run.
The Beach dented the scoreboard in the first inning. Weber singled to center field and advanced to third on a hit by Reyes, before crossing the plate on an Aggie error.
LBSU went up 2-0 in the top of the third as St. Germain led off with a single. Weber moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt before Reyes connected for her second hit of the game. After junior Christina Schallig walked to load the bases, DeBaun came through with an RBI single up the middle.
Texas A&M (24-6) responded in the bottom half of the inning, pushing three runs across to take the lead for good. Meagan May highlighted the rally with an RBI double, before she put the Aggies up 4-2 with a home run in the fifth.
Long Beach State continues its stay in San Diego on Saturday when it takes on Harvard (9 a.m.) and Oregon State (11:30 a.m.) at SDSU Softball Stadium.
