Reports From LBSU
The Long Beach State track and field team wrapped up action on the final day of the MPSF Indoor Championships Saturday at Dempsey Indoor in Seattle.
Nicholas Armstrong, a local product out of Long Beach Poly High School, concluded a strong showing in the heptathlon, placing seventh overall with 4,983 points. His point total puts him second in school history.
After posting top 10 finishes in three out of four events yesterday, including a first-place performance in the high jump, Armstrong took sixth in the 60-meter hurdles and 11th in the pole vault and 1000-meter run to claim the seventh slot.
Sam Jeter added a seventh-place showing in the 400-meter dash with a season-low 48.31 seconds, which ranks him ninth among the 49er all-time top 10. Richard Crawford also competed in the 400m, running a season-best 49.71.
Colin Dubar, who scored in the weight throw on Friday, got the 49ers on the board again in the shot put as he finished eighth with a distance of 53-11.25.
Matt Maldonado notched three points for The Beach in the mile run, finishing sixth overall with a time of 4:04.36. Nimrod Piggee also grabbed the sixth spot in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.27 seconds.
Alex Freitas was LBSU’s top finisher in the 800-meter run with a season-low 1:50.83, which was good enough for ninth place. Freitas just missed out on scoring for The Beach as he came in .03 seconds behind Luke Lemenager of Washington State. Jonathan Evans also clocked in with a personal-record 1:55.45 in the 800m (19th place).
Crawford, Freitas, Evans and Jeter also put together a sixth-place performance in the men’s 4×400 relay, notching the ninth-best mark in school history (3:16.91).
On the women’s side, the high jumpers highlighted the second day of action for the 49ers. Tayler O’Connor led the way, tying for fourth place by clearing 5-08.50. O’Connor bettered her lifetime best as she is now tied for fifth on the 49er all-time top 10 list. Coulter also scored for The Beach, tying for seventh with a mark of 5-06.50, while Katrina Graves-Johnson notched a personal-best 5-06.50.
Jennifer Rodriguez was LBSU’s top finisher in the 3000-meter run, clocking in with the fourth-fastest time in school history (9:57.31).
