Senior Alex Shaw and junior Randi Hicks punched their tickets to the NCAA Championships in the women’s javelin as the Long Beach State track and field team opened action at the NCAA West Preliminary meet Thursday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The duo advanced to the national championships, which will be held in Eugene, Ore., June 9-12, with top 12 finishes. Shaw placed ninth overall with a distance of 162-06, while Hicks was right behind her in 10th (161-11).
Both junior Sam Jeter and senior Kenneth Medwood finished in the top 24 in the 400-meter hurdles to advance to Friday’s quarterfinal round. Jeter recorded his second-best time of the season at 51.13, while Medwood clocked in at 51.17.
Senior Alex Freitas also qualified for the quarterfinal round in the 800m as he crossed the finish line in a season-best 1:49.50.
Sophomore Matt Maldonado took ninth in his heat and 40th overall in the 1500m with a time of 3:55.37. Medwood also competed in the long jump, finishing 35th (22-09.25), while junior Eric Nowell came in 42nd (22-01.75).
Jennifer Rodriguez (37:18.02) placed 39th in the 10000m.
Long Beach State continues the three-day NCAA West Preliminary meet on Friday, May 28.
