Beach Tennis clinched their third straight Big West regular-season championship with a 5-2 win Saturday at the hands of UC Santa Barbara. With the win, the 49ers also secure the top spot at the upcoming Big West Championships later this month.

No. 38 Long Beach State improved to 7-0 in Big West play, while handing UC Santa Barbara its second loss to clinch the title.

The 49ers started the day with a win at doubles in three very close matches. Deborah Armstrong and Anais Dallara defeated Dockendorf/Lozano 9-7 in the only doubles match that did not go to a tiebreaker. The 49ers then took the point with a win at No. 1 doubles by Alawi/Manasse over Hausman/Ojeda, winning 9-8.

In singles, Long Beach State’s success at the top of the lineup continued as the 49ers won at No. 1 through 3 to win the match. Jaklin Alawi defeated Sofia Novak 6-4, 7-6 (5) and Anais Dallara beat Natalia Lozano 6-3, 7-6 (4).

The 49ers also picked up a win at No. 3 singles from Debroah Armstrong who won 7-5, 6-3, and Sarah Cantlay also won for the second day in a row, defeating Jordan Dockendorf 6-3, 7-6 (4) to get Long Beach State’s fifth point.

Julie Luzar fell in three sets to Annabel Gledden, and Tova Hausman defeated Rachel Manasse at No.4 6-3, 6-3.

Long Beach State finishes the initial slate of Big West play next weekend, traveling to Cal State Northridge to play the Matadors on Saturday, April 10 before hosting Saint Mary’s the following day.
