Freshman Jaklin Alawi was named the Big West Athlete of the Week by the conference office yesterday. Alawi is the second 49er from women’s tennis honored this season.
Alawi, in her first full week at No. 1 in both singles and doubles led the 49ers to a pair of 7-0 victories and moved to 8-0 in the last four matches for Long Beach State.
A freshman from Sofia, Bulgaria, Alawi picked up a pair of victories at No. 1 doubles with Rachel Manasse, defeating Mai/Rodriguez of CS Fullerton 8-1 before defeating Mizyuk/Stevens of Nevada 8-3.
In singles, Alawi defeated Mai 6-2, 6-2, and then picked up an important win over Nevada at No. 1 singles in a 7-6 (6), 6-4 victory over Maria Mizyuk. That win was part of a 7-0 victory over a team that had beaten Long Beach State last season.
Alawi is the second player to be selected by the Big West this season, joining Deborah Armstrong who earned the honor after Long Beach State’s match with No. 18 Washington.
