Freshman Jaklin Alawi was named the Big West Player of the Week as announced by the conference office today. Alawi earned a pair of key singles victories to help Long Beach State win its third straight Big West regular-season crown.
Alawi, who made her first appearance in the singles rankings at No. 125 last week, celebrated the accomplishment with a pair of important victories in big matches for the 49ers. First, against No. 55 Cal Poly, Alawi defeated No. 85 Susie Matzenauer in three sets to help the 49ers take a 5-2 win, and the next day she defeated UC Santa Barbara’s Sofia Novak 6-4, 7-6 (5) to clinch the top seed in the Big West Tournament and a win over the Gauchos 5-2.
Previously winning the award after a perfect 4-0 week against Cal State Fullerton and Nevada, Alawi’s selection marks the third time that a 49er player has been chosen as the Big West Player of the Week. Long Beach State’s Deborah Armstrong also won the award earlier in the season.
