Reports From LBSU

Long Beach State’s day to honor Hannah Grady became a long one, as the 49ers and the Tigers dodged the rain, but eventually got a result in, a 4-1 victory for Long Beach State.

The day started with the scheduled festivities at 11 a.m., as Court No. 1 at the Rhodes Tennis Center was dedicated in honor of Grady, the only four-time Big West Player of the Year in any sport. Following the ceremony, the courts were dried three times, but each time the rains restarted delaying the start of play.

Finally the team’s got started after three and a half hours, starting with singles rather than doubles to get play in. Anais Dallara took her first loss to No. 122 Jennifer Widjaja at No. 1 singles, but the 49ers rallied through the rest of the lineup.

Jaklin Alawi made quick work of Christina Goehl at No 2 singles, winning 6-0, 6-2, and Anna Jeczmionkaalso had a solid win at No. 5 singles, winning 6-1, 6-2 as the two freshmen got Long Beach State on the board.

Rachel Manasse outlasted Olga Gumenyuk at No. 4 singles 7-5, 7-5, and Deborah Armstrong clinched the match with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory. With the 49ers leading 4-1 and the rain restarting, the match was called and Long Beach State improved to 6-1 on the year and 3-0 in Big West play

“I’d especially like to thank those in attendance who helped dry the courts three times over five hours today: Les Robbins, Brent Raes, Rob Burge, Lance Lockwood, John Costello, Brian Konawai, and Terry Rhodes,” said head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello. “Without their help, the match would not have been played today. Thanks fellas.”

Long Beach State returns to the Rhodes Tennis Center on Sunday, hosting No. 18 Washington at 11 a.m.
