Long Beach State swept the doubles point for a solid start, but dropped four singles matches, losing to Nevada 4-3 on Saturday. Rachel Manasse and Anais Dallara each picked up two wins for Long Beach State on the day.
The 49ers started off quickly, as Rachel Manasse and Anais Dallara worked to a smooth 8-1 win in doubles. Deborah Armstrong and Lisa Sutton then clinched the point with an 8-3 win over De Vrye and Ogata.
Trouble befell the 49ers in singles though. Manasse scored an easy win over Lais Ogata 6-2, 6-2, but Julie Luzar, Lisa Sutton and Hannah Grady all lost in two sets to put Long Beach State in jeopardy. Anais Dallara won in three sets over Maria Mizyuk 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 to keep the 49ers alive, but after a tough 11-9 tiebreaker loss in the first set, Debroah Armstrong lost at No. 2 singles 7-6, 5-7, 6-1 to Florence De Vrye to give Nevada the match.
Long Beach State remains at home next week, starting off the week with a Wednesday match against Cornell beginning at 2 p.m. in the Rhodes Tennis Center.
