The volleyball team is wishing they weren’t traveling right now, but Long Beach State tennis opened up the fall schedule by sweeping their three doubles matches and Stephanie Jeanes, Lisa Sutton and Rachel Manasse won their first two matches in singles play at the UC Berkeley Nike Invitational on Friday. The top doubles team of Hannah Grady and Jeanes defeated Pacific’s Jolanta Twarowska and Sasha Fisher in the Gold Draw, 8-3, before Jeanes went onto defeated Erin Young of Saint Mary’s and third-seeded Florence DeVrye of Nevada both 7-5, 6-4 in the Blue Draw.
The team of Deborah Armstrong and Lisa Sutton defeated third-seeded Ana Chkkhkivihsvili and Young of Saint Mary’s 8-3, before Sutton went onto defeat Kelly Buckley of Santa Clara 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 and Catie Visico of Cal, 6-0, 6-3 in the White Draw. The freshmen tandem of Julie Luzar and Rachel Manasse defeated Nevada’s Caroline Steven and Katarina Huba of Nevada 8-5 to finish off doubles play for the day in the White Draw. Manasse then defeated Arizona State’s Ali Van Home 6-3, 6-2, before taking care of Ariane Maschelelei of Arizona 6-2, 6-4 to open up her college career.
