From LBSU reports
The Long Beach State track and field team had eight individual first-place finishes to go along with 33 season and lifetime bests as the men and women competed at the Northern Arizona Team Challenge at JL Walkup Skydome on Saturday. The men’s team swept the quad meet, defeating Arizona State, Northern Arizona and Southern Utah. The women, meanwhile, edged both ASU and SUU, but fell to host NAU. “We came here to improve on our performances from last weekend and that is definitely what we saw today,” said 49er head coach Andy Sythe.
Senior Brent Gray was the top finisher in both sprint events, winning the 60-meter and 200-meter. Gray bettered his school record set last year in the 60m dash with a mark of 6.75. In the 200m, he clocked in at 20.94, just .01 seconds off his previous lifetime best. Senior Austin Fowler also had a good day in the sprint events, placing fifth in both the 60m and 200m.
Senior Collin Cram was also a double winner as he claimed the pole vault and long jump. Cram posted the sixth-best mark in school history at 22-10.50 to win the latter event as the Beach completed a sweep in the long jump with freshmen Cameron Gillett (22-00.25) and Michael Vaughan (21-11.50) rounding out the top three.
Sophomore Christopher Lawson finished ahead of the pack in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in with the second-fastest mark in 49er history at 8.16 seconds. Classmate Nimrod Piggee, who won the same event at the Mountain T’s last weekend, had a third-place finish with a personal-best time of 8.31.
Junior Alex Black wrapped up the top performers for the Long Beach State men, clearing 6-08.00 to win the high jump.
Lawson, Fowler, Piggee and Richard Crawford also combined to take the top spot in the 4×400 relay. The quartet recorded the fifth-fastest time in school history at 3:15.44.
On the women’s side, freshman BJ Triplett won the 60-meter dash in 7.8 seconds, ranking her fifth in the LBSU record books. Triplett also had a fifth-place showing in the 200m (25.65).
Senior Miia Mobley picked up a first-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 39-09.25, which puts her second on the all-time charts.
Senior Katie Crowe was tied for first in the pole vault, but ended up taking second place in a jump-off with Northern Arizona’s Jami Michaud. Classmate Jennifer Onyeagbako, meanwhile, finished second in the shot put with a toss of 48-01.25. Both Crowe and Onyeagbako recorded personal bests in their respective events.
Long Beach State will return to action next weekend when it heads to Seattle, Wash., for the Husky Classic from Feb. 14-15. The meet will mark the 49ers’ final tune-up before the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor championships (Feb. 27-28).
