Chelsea Grabowski scored two goals, including a goal with :08 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime, but the Long Beach State 49ers women’s water polo lost a close match to No. 18 UC Davis, 8-6, in a Big West Conference match at the 49er Campus Pool Saturday afternoon.
Long Beach State (7-17, 0-3) trailed UC Davis, 6-4, late in the fourth quarter before getting a goal fromLauren Sieprath to trim the lead to, 6-5, with 2:40 left in the game. The 49ers retained possession with 28 seconds remaining in the game and worked the ball around until Chelsea Grabowski floated a shot over the arms of the Aggie goalie to tie the game 6-6.
In overtime, UC Davis got two quick goals from Jessica Dunn and held on the rest of the way for the win. Dunn scored a game-high three goals to lead UC Davis.
Long Beach State jumped out early in the game on UC Davis scoring the first goal of the match by Krizia Cerda, Cerda is the 49ers leading scorer on the year with 36 goals, just one minute into the contest. UC Davis tied the score just before the end of the quarter on a goal from Carey Faber.
Both teams traded a couple of goals, as Grabowski and Clair Martin each scored goals for The Beach, and the match was tied 3-3 at halftime.
The 49ers got a goal from Katie Rogers in the third period but gave up two goals to the Aggies and trailed 5-4 heading into the final period.
The Beach’s Kristen Straiger led all goalies with a game-high eight saves.
On Sunday, the 49ers take on to No. 16 Pacific in a Big West Conference game at noon.
