Junior goaltender Kristen Stragier made 10 saves against a high-powered USC attack, but the No. 2 Women of Troy proved too strong in a 13-3 victory over the 49ers in Long Beach State’s home opener. Freshman Miranda Furuto led the 49ers with two goals.
Long Beach State held strong in the opening minutes, but USC took a 2-0 lead with a pair of Forel Davies goals in the first four minutes. Trailing 3-0, the 49ers got on the board with Miranda Furuto’s first collegiate goal.
USC advanced their lead with two Patricia Jansco goals in the early minutes of the second quarter, but Long Beach State answered back with a Krizia Cerda goal at 4:26 to cut the lead to 6-2, and that score would hold for the rest of the half.
The Women of Troy controlled the second half action, scoring the first three goals in the third period prior to Furuto’s second tally with :28 seconds remaining in the quarter. USC’s Kara-Leigh Huse scored three out of USC’s four goals in the final quarter however, as the Women of Troy held the 49ers scoreless in the period.
Long Beach State will travel to San Diego this weekend for the Triton Invitational, playing four matches on Saturday and Sunday. The 49ers next play in the Campus Pool on Friday, Feb. 12 when they host UC San Diego at 7 p.m.
