The Long Beach State women’s soccer team (4-4) put together a late rally, but ultimately fell to host San Diego State, 2-1, at SDSU Sports Deck on Sunday afternoon.
Five 49ers had two shots, including sophomore Nicole Hubbard, who scored LBSU’s lone goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Nicoline Jorgensen played the entire 90 minutes, notching four saves.
The first half was evenly played as both teams had three shots, but it was SDSU that took a 1-0 lead thanks to Hillary Harvey’s goal in the 38th minute.
The Aztecs (5-3-2) eventually added to their lead in the second half when Cat Walker placed the ball into the upper left netting at the 70:16 mark, but The Beach responded just 2 minutes and 24 seconds later as junior Nikki Myers found Hubbard, who blasted a shot from 18 yards out for her third goal of the season.
Trailing 2-1, the 49ers went on the offensive, taking nine shots over a 13-minute span, with their best chances to even the score coming in the final six minutes.
With 5:50 remaining, freshman Shannon Bullock shot wide right with an open goal after Hubbard had chipped a pass to her over an SDSU defender. The Beach had another opportunity just 36 seconds later when Aztec goalkeeper Aubree Southwick was on the ground fighting for the ball with a handful of players before it scooted out to Alex Balcer, who fired wide left.
Overall, The Beach held a narrow advantage in shots (13-11) and corner kicks (2-1), but it was SDSU that won the battle in shots on goal, 6-3. Walker led San Diego State with her team-leading fourth goal on four attempts, while Southwick had two saves.
