The Long Beach State women’s soccer team (3-2) won its second straight game on the road as the 49ers defeated Harvard, 2-0, Friday afternoon at Ohiri Field.

Freshman Whitney Velez and junior Shawna Gordon both netted a goal, while junior Jenn Brooks and sophomore Nicole Hubbard each had an assist.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nicoline Jorgensen notched her first shutout in just her second start of the season. Jorgensen, who had four saves on the afternoon, has allowed only one goal over the last three games (225 minutes).

After putting the pressure on the Crimson defense early, the 49ers eventually broke through in the 37th minute when Velez scored her first collegiate goal. Brooks controlled the ball after receiving a corner kick from Gordon and slipped it through three defenders to Velez, who turned and fired a shot to the far post.

LBSU remained in control for the first half, holding the advantage in shots (8-to-5) and corner kicks (5-to-2).

Long Beach State stayed aggressive after the break, taking a 2-0 lead after just under 10 minutes of action. At the 54:42 mark, Gordon headed in her second goal of the season, finding the back of the net on a cross from Hubbard.

Harvard (1-2-1) then started to attack on offense, outshooting The Beach, 12-0, in the final 35 minutes. Jorgensen and the 49er defense stayed strong, however, preserving the shutout with four saves and five blocked shots.Overall, the Crimson won the battle in shots, 19-9, and were led by Katherine Sheeleigh, who had four attempts.

“We dropped our line back and sustained their pressure,” said coach Mauricio Ingrassia.  “It wasn’t the prettiest, but it’s a road win and we’ll always take one of those.”

Long Beach State closes out its four-match road swing on Sunday, Sept. 13, when it takes on No. 5 Boston College at Newton Campus Field. Kick-off is slated for 10 a.m. PT.
