The Long Beach State women’s soccer team made up for the 3-1 loss to Kansas on Friday as they erupted for three goals over a six-minute span in the second half to run away with a 4-1 victory over No. 21 Missouri Sunday at Walton Stadium.  The 49ers evened their record at 2-2 with their first win over a ranked opponent since 2005.

“We really carried over the momentum from the second half on Friday,” said coach Mauricio Ingrassia.  “We played well in the first half, but it took us a little while to get used to the Missouri style…we played under pressure great, but we capitalized more in the second half.”

LBSU outshot the Tigers, 14-10, while also holding a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore Nicole Hubbard, who moved to forward this weekend, led The Beach with two goals on three shots.

“I feel really comfortable up top,” said Hubbard, who broke the school record for goals at Mayfair.  “I just know what to do when I get into the 18-yard box.”

Junior Lindsay Bullock and freshman Jenny Soza also found the back of the net. Junior Karina Camacho tallied a pair of assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nicoline Jorgensen earned her first start of the year, allowing just one goal while recording two saves on 10 shot attempts.

LBSU got on the board in the 29th minute when sophomore Shawna Gordon sent a free kick from the right side in to Bullock, who redirected the ball to the far post. It was Bullock’s second goal of the season and 17th of her career.

The two teams remained in a scoreless deadlock for the remainder of the half as the 49ers took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Missouri, which was picked as the favorite to win the Big 12 and started the season ranked in the top 15, tied the score at 1-1 after just 10 minutes of action in the second period, scoring their lone goal on a penalty kick.

The 49ers then went on a scoring spree, starting with Soza’s first collegiate goal at the 73:40 mark. Freshman Whitney Velez took a shot that hit the crossbar and Soza rebounded it from 10 yards out, one-timing it to the back of the net.

In the 76th minute, Camacho made a move on her defender on the right side and then sent a pass to Velez in the box, who found Hubbard for her first goal of the season. Hubbard then struck again just 2 minutes and 26 seconds later, scoring on a header off a cross from Camacho.

Long Beach State continues its four-match road stretch next weekend when it heads to the East Coast to take on Harvard (Sept. 11) and No. 6 Boston College (Sept. 13).
