Long Beach State dropped the doubles point but came back with a strong singles effort to complete conference play with an undefeated 8-0 record in a 6-1 win on the road at Cal State Northridge.Jaklin Alawi continued to anchor the lineup with wins at No. 1 doubles and singles Saturday.

Alawi and Rachel Manasse picked up a win for the 49ers at No. 1 doubles, defeating Doane/Yang 8-7, but the 49ers lost at both No. 2 and 3 doubles by 8-6 margins to fall behind the Matadors after doubles.

The early struggles were stopped after the break in impressive work in singles. Alawi defended her #125 ranking with a 6-2, 6-2, win at No. 1 singles over Nina Jaworowski, and Anais Dallara also had a big win at No. 2 over Brooke Doane, winning 6-2, 6-1.

Deborah Armstrong and Sarah Cantlay were both straight set winners as well. Julie Luzar entered a third set before the match was decided, eventually prevailing over Maria Pistalu 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Rachel Manasse won in an exciting third set tiebreaker at No. 4 singles, defeating Whitney Paluch 3-6, 6-3, 11-9.

Long Beach State returns to the Rhodes Tennis Center on Sunday, hosting a ranked opponent as the 49ers continue to make a push for potential at-large berth consideration, should the team falter in the Big West Tournament. Play with No. 52 Saint Mary’s is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
