No. 38 Long Beach State lost the doubles point in a sweep, but leaned on their strength in singles, defeating two individually ranked opponents to beat No. 55 Cal Poly 5-2 on the road. Long Beach State improved to 6-0 in Big West competition.
The 49ers started out slowly, as No. 26 Brittany Blalock and Susie Matzenauer held from in an 8-3 victory over Jaklin Alawi and Rachel Manasse. Long Beach State then lost the point with an 8-2 loss at No. 3 doubles, and the final match between Armstrong/Dallara and Lee/Wong was shortened to 7-6 with the point decided.
Beach tennis pulled their way back into the match in singles. Manasse cruised in a 6-2, 6-2 win over Diane Filip at No. 4 singles, and Deborah Armstrong took a 6-1, 6-4 victory over a Steffi Wong at No. 3.
Anais Dallara then defeated No. 86 Brittany Blalock 7-6 (5), 6-3 to put Long Beach State one match away from a win, and No. 125 Alawi carried the day in the featured match at No. 1 singles with No. 85 Susie Matzenauer, winning 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
Sarah Cantlay was the final winner on the day picking up a 6-4, 7-6 win over Jocelyn Davis, while Julie Luzar was defeated by Alexa Lee in three sets.
The 49ers continue their trip to the Central Coast with one more match on Saturday, facing UC Santa Barbara as Beach Tennis tries to remain undefeated in Big West play.
