After winning their first two games of the season, against University of Redlands and the UCSD Tritons on Saturday, No. 9 Long Beach State (2-2) dropped both games on Sunday, the final day of the UCSD Triton Invitational.  The 49ers lost to the Pepperdine Waves and Loyola.

In Sunday’s morning game the Waves took the lead early and Long Beach State was never able to catch up. Pepperdine came out with two early goals, but the Niners responded quickly. Pepperdine scored twice more, but with only a second left on the clock, Long Beach State cut the Waves’ lead in half, finishing the first quarter down 4-2. The second quarter went the way of the Waves, outscoring Long Beach 3-1 to enter halftime with a 7-3 lead over the Niners. The Beach was able to cut Pepperdine’s lead to 9-5 in the third and to 13-7 in the fourth, but the Waves were able to hold on for the win.

In the second game of the day, No. 9 Long Beach State took on No. 8 Loyola Marymount University to determine third and fourth places in the Triton Invite. LMU scored early in the first quarter, but Long Beach was able to equalize a minute and a half later. The Lions then went on a 5-1 run to enter halftime with a 6-2 lead. Both teams scored three goals in the third quarter, leaving the Niners behind by four going into the fourth. Loyola Marymount was able to maintain a four-goal lead for the rest of the game, tabbing a final score of 12-8.

With the final result in, LMU took third place in the tournament while the 49ers took fourth. The No. 2 USC Trojans took first place, second place went to the No. 7 Pepperdine Waves in second. Long Beach State will face each of these teams in the regular season.

The 49ers take on the Trojans of USC first, this Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. PT in Los Angeles, Calif. The Trojans hope to maintain their first place standing in the MPSF Conference, and the Niners hope to upset the nationally No. 2 ranked Trojans.
