From LBSU reports

The No. 10 49ers scored first, but couldn’t maintain the lead in Wednesday afternoon’s game against the No. 2 Stanford Cardinals. Seniors Jake Kinne and Ash Blythen led the charge for Long Beach State, but the 49ers were outscored 10-3 in the middle periods.  Long Beach State (9-11, 0-3 MPSF) had the match’s only first period goal. The Cardinals (16-2, 3-0 MPSF) took care of the rest of the scoring for the match, however, beginning by outscoring the 49ers 5-1 in the second period.

LBSU fared a little better in the third period, scoring two goals of their own, but Stanford was once again dominant, taking the quarter 5 goals to 2. Long Beach State was finally able to match the Cardinal’s scoring in the fourth period, as both squads notched 3 goals. The late effort was not enough for the 49ers, and Stanford walked away with the home win and a 13-7 victory.

Seniors Ash Blythen each scored 2 goals for LBSU, and Taylor Clute, Pavle Filipovic and Jeff Greenwood contributed for the team with one goal apiece. Goalie Derek Wiebe-Bailey stepped up to save 12 Cardinal shot attempts in the loss.

Next up for Long Beach St. is a road trip to Davis, Calif. Saturday to take on No. 20 Air Force and the No. 11 UC Davis Aggies. The LBSU vs. Air Force match will begin at 12:30 p.m. PT, and will be followed by 49ers vs. Aggies at 4:00 p.m. PT.
